Let's discuss

Book clubs and the integration of faith & scholarship

A blog post Women Scholars and Professionals

Let's discuss

Are you curious about our book clubs that get advertised at The Well each semester? Over the years, these communities have grown and developed into places of thoughtful discipleship and mutual support. If you’re interested but never had the chance to join one, you can catch the feel of these meetings in an article written by our book club host Jasmine Obeyesekere. We’ve got two more book clubs coming up this June and we hope you join us if you are able!

“If you are a Christian woman academic and want to be encouraged by others in different career stages, be personally transformed in your discipleship, and would love tools to think Christianly about the stuff of your work — the Women Scholars and Professionals book club is for you!”

The integration of faith and scholarship holds a special place in our book club conversations as we seek to create space for discussion and mutual encouragement in connecting our daily work with our daily prayer. We’re reminded of this story from historian Cynthia Prescott in which she chronicles her journey of deepening her faithful scholarship. How might God be inviting you to explore the ways to connect your work and faith more deeply?

“I thought my work as an historian didn't allow for integration of faith and academic work in the same way a scientist might see God's hand in creation. Instead, I saw my Christian vocation in the academy to be serving others through teaching. I'm learning to see both my teaching and my research as moving us toward God's call to justice.”
