A vision for work and calling

A vision for work and calling

What does it mean to be called by God and then shaped in and for the work? Over the years, Joanna Meyer has noticed what she calls a “critical gap” in discipleship for women in Christian churches and organizations. She states, “As our roles in public life have grown, the church’s vision for women’s work and calling has not grown with it.” Today, we’re sharing the recording from our Summer 2024 Book Club author event with Joanna Meyer.

This conversation with Joanna offers a snapshot of the experience of participating in a Women Scholars and Professionals book club — plus, you’ll enjoy getting to know Joanna and the ideas in her book as they discuss perfectionism, mentorship, and the nuances of working well with male colleagues. This conversation is great to listen to, even if you weren't able to participate in the book club! Bonus: if you’re interested in reading Women, Work, and Calling with a small group of your own choosing, you can use Karen’s own discussion guide to lead your conversation.

“In your heart of hearts — your deepest conviction — do you believe that God is sufficient for your need? Because if we don’t, it’s treating perfection like an idol in our life. We can become enslaved to the point where it distorts us.”

Following the call into academia can present unique challenges for women — and even more so when race is a contributing factor. We’re inspired by those who are persisting in the work of pursuing their calling and are grateful to share their stories. Lakeya Omogun Afolalu recounts her path into academia and offers the gift of her experience for those who are looking for ways to navigate the complicated waters.

“God’s grace, wisdom, and promises are more than enough to navigate this academic journey as a Black woman. I keep this in mind when the culture of academia tempts me to compete with my faith values. It is no mistake that I have become a professor.”
